Dear Diary

Over the weekend, I have undergone a transformation. I am afraid my last few bits of humanity , my inhibitions, may be hopelessly lost.  I have completely given in to this 'creative' lifestyle.  It seems to be the only way to succeed at it.

There is no going back, is there?

Good.

Comedy is kind of like having that really painful injury, and people keep poking it and yelling in your face , ''does that hurt''?   and the one that hurts the most, is the one that they will laugh at.   So you have to dig deep, and it takes practice to be able to pull that experience out of you.

Man, have I got some stuff to tell them.

Entertaining people , and the business of it, seems to be like a puzzle.  They key to the puzzle is like most things in life.  It is YOUR puzzle.  Someone else's key won't work for you.

LOL.

The Making Of --Boxy Bovines

We are here today with Mark Burkenbine, the creator of the cartoon, media and sales juggernaut 'Boxy Bovines'.

On Purpose:  Mark, we are happy to have you here.  Thanks for squeezing us in to your busy schedule.

Mark:  No Problem, the eggs and coffee won't kick in for another half hour ish...

On Purpose:   That is a lovely thought.    SO , tell us about Boxy Bovines.  How did this come about?

Mark:   Well...as some of you know, there is a dark place in my soul that haunts my every moment.  I have had nightmares about these cow creatures since I was a baby.  MOO...MOOO.   AGGGH..
Sorry, sometimes it sneaks up on me.

On Purpose:  Sorry Mark.  I had no idea it was that traumatic for you.   They seem so...cute.

Mark:   that is how they get you, man.

On Purpose:    But.. aren't you pushing these towards kids, with all the cuteness?

Mark:   That is where the money is.  Yeah, if the kids like it, I will make a mint...at least until the first one of these things comes to life and then, it will be too late. I will be long gone with the money.

On Purpose:   Comes to life?   What the hell are you doing?

Mark:  They made me do it , man.   Those cows have been trying forever to get to this dimension....I can tell you their secret plan because nobody reads this blog.      Doesn't this story beat the truth?

On Purpose:  Jackass.  What is the truth?

Mark:   I had a project roll across my desk with a strong sense of urgency.   It was called 'How to Succeed with 10. 23"  and the math was wrong.  It was actually , like, $7.    I didn't have enough money to do my laundry, my wife had a list of things for me to get, and I had a surgery coming up as it was.    Basically my life is in the shitter, and I needed to come up with something cheap and cute and give it a shot.      I NEED to sell stuff, ....so I needed to come up with something to sell.  Merchandising...I will draw Boxy Bovines on my own used shirts and cups if I have to, to start out.

Time to get creative.  I need help, dude.

ON Purpose:   Sack up. This is not Oprah.  There is no crying in cartoon marketing.  Keep grinding...

Mark:   Thanks man.   I needed that.     Watch for the shirts, prints and anything I can come up with on etsy, ebay and selling straight from the blog if I have to.    Wait til you see the story lines and the 'making of' ....

Boxy Bovines can be found soon at mburkenbine.blogspot.com  , Soundcloud, Youtube, Linked In, Twitter and other social media.   Somebody work out a licensing deal with me, or something :)

boxy bovines is created to draw attention to the dreaded 'This is not how we have always done it' syndrome.   I myself am recovering from the affliction.   Remember..if you are goingto possibly fail...maybe you should at least fail at something different.

ON Purpose:   Have a good morning, and thank you for your time.

The Making Of

ON PUPOSE! :   Mark, you have been working on this beast for a year plus, and rumor is the original project is thirty plus years old.

Mark:   Yes, I have been drudging this idea around for most of my life.  It is time to make it happen.

On PURPOSE!:  What finally pulled you into the entertainment business?

Mark:  To be honest, I used to wet myself if I was asked to stand in front of a crowd ,when I originally came up with the idea.   Now I am good with a crowd....well, I won't wet myself from being scared. The Dr  did put me on a water pill, so I may still piss my pants, but I really don't care anymore what people think.  Hopefully they will at least laugh at it.

oN pUrPose!:   That was kind of the answer I was expecting.  You strike me as the type that had a rough time in high school.

Mark:  And you strike me as a judgmental prick. (laughs, but not really)   Anyway, I just had this idea for a series of shows, a network of them....Kind of how comic books get woven together....I am going to try to put it together for a live variety show and see how it works.  I expect it to be brutal at first.

No Purpose!:  So it is blogs, video, singing, comedy, news, horror, drama ,illustrations....fiction & reality?

Mark:  And bowling and Small Houses with wheelchair accessible ideas.

No Porpoise:!  If your small house ideas involve a kitchen sink, you have it all covered.  So , how do you market that?  It seems like you are spread very thin.

Mark:  I would be spread thin, if I was trying to finish one show.   It really is a network of projects...may take forever to get it right....it may start airing tomorrow.    Many pieces of it are spread out all over the internet.   Stories, Scifi....some songs .   A lot has been completed.   I am trying to get the set figured out .  Keep in mind, all this is coming together with zero funds and zero training.   I am trying put  the Little Engine that Could  theory into practice.

On 'Pose !  The lack of training shows.   I have seen some of your 'work'.   Stunning lack of production values and edit.

Mark:  I am a fan of used car commercials and bad movies.   Get used to it.   The material will do fine without the slick production values.   I HATE slick

On Purpose!:    So, you are just trying to do everything you always wanted to do.

Mark:  Yep.  That is the way it is supposed to be , isn't it?  I want to support myself and my family, by doing what I want to do, and being able to be there for them when they need me.   We have some health issues that make regular jobs a little difficult to keep, and I aspire to one day be an employer for people who have more to offer than just setting on their ass or working for minimum wage.   I want to be an employer that people believe in, and works with the community and its needs.       Just a dream...

On Purpose:   You may need to work on the public urination problem, while you are at it.

Mark:  Everybody needs a trademark.
